The most common reasons car insurance claims are rejected

The most common reasons car insurance claims are rejected

You don’t take out a policy expecting it not to pay out, but it does happen, and more often than you’d think. It can be as simple as a detail missed on the application or a misunderstanding about what the policy actually includes.

Reliable car insurance is essential for all drivers, and knowing where things tend to go wrong puts you in a much better position if you ever need to make a claim.

Incorrect or missing information

When you take out car insurance, your provider uses the details you give them to decide how much to charge. If any of those details turn out to be wrong, even unintentionally, they can refuse to pay a claim. Even forgetting to mention a minor bump from a few years back can cause problems, because insurers check your history against the Claims and Underwriting Exchange database, which holds six years’ worth of records.

Modifications can trip you up too. Aftermarket alloys or tinted windows might just be cosmetic, but if you haven’t told your insurer about them, that’s enough for them to push back. Then there’s fronting, which is where a parent insures a car in their name even though their child is the one driving it most of the time. Insurers see that as misrepresentation, and they take it seriously.

Using the vehicle outside policy terms

Your policy will include a class of use which is basically a description of what you’re allowed to use the car for. If you’ve got social-only cover but you’re commuting to work every day, that’s a problem. It’s one of those things people don’t always check, but the gap between social and domestic and social, domestic and commuting can be the difference between a paid claim and a rejected one.

Your car also needs to be roadworthy when the incident happens. An expired MOT or worn tyres gives your insurer a reason to turn you down.

Failing to follow the claims process

Leaving it too long to report an accident is one of the easiest ways to have a claim refused. Most policies ask you to get in touch as soon as you reasonably can, and even a few weeks’ delay can work against you. Take photos at the scene and get the other driver’s details to make your case stronger when the insurer looks into what happened.

Fraud and insurance scams

Inflating a claim to try and get a bigger payout might seem low risk, but insurers put serious resources into fraud detection and they’re experienced at spotting when figures that don’t add up.

Ghost broking is another issue that’s become more common, particularly with younger drivers. Scammers sell fake or doctored policies through social media or unfamiliar websites at prices that look too good to pass up. If you’re not sure whether your cover is legitimate, contact the insurer directly or look them up on the FCA register before you need to rely on it.
