Children Who Have Same-Sex Parents Are Happier and More Successful, Studies Show

pros cons of being the youngest child

We live the world, where still not everyone believes that gay people should have the same rights as heterosexuals, especially when it comes to children. The following three studies will prove them wrong.

Study No. 1

This study that was conducted by the University of Melbourne showed that children raised by same-sex couples have better health and well-being compared to their peers. This study was one of the largest of its kind as well.

The researchers looked at the physical, mental and social well-being of the children, who had same-sex parents.

The researchers found out, that when it came to general health and family cohesion, children from same-sex parents got 6 percent higher scores than the general population. In other categories like mental health, behavior, and self-esteem, their results did not differ from the children, who have heterosexual parents.

Dr. Simon Crouch from the Jack Brockhoff Child Health and Wellbeing Program thinks that same-sex parent families get along well, which has a positive effect on the children. He firmly believes that people should not fall into gender stereotypes and take on roles that suit best for their skills. Crouch says that this is the secret to a happy and harmonious family life, which also ensures health and well-being for the children.

So how was one of the largest studies on same-sex children made?

During the study, the researchers examined 500 children and 315 parents, who were in a same-sex relationship.

Study No. 2

There was a similar study made earlier this year by the Williams Institute, which reported that children of lesbians have higher self-esteem and lower conduct problems than those of heterosexual couples.

This study had 102 participants altogether.

51 of them, 25 Dutch girls and 25 Dutch boys, who were all born to lesbian parents through donor insemination. The rest were demographically similar teens from heterosexual parents.

During the study, the children had to fill out a questionnaire, which measured parent-child relationship, child psychological adjustment, and child substance use.

The results showed that children of lesbian parents had higher self-esteem and lower conduct problem scores. The scores did not differ in the child-parent relationship and personal well-being among all the participants.

Study No. 3

There was also a study in 2012, which researched the influence of having two mothers. It was found out during this research that teenagers with two mothers were generally happier in life and more successful in their school work.

To go into detail, the 2012-year study, which analyzed 17-year-olds teenagers with lesbian mothers found out that the teens had a high school GPAs ranging between A to B-plus. The teens also had strong bonds with their mothers and looked up to them.

The results can be considered entirely credible because the study had 76 participants, who were analyzed over the course of 26 years.

One of the researchers, Nanette Gartelle, says that the observation showed that same-sex couples plan their children very thoroughly and they are very engaged in the child’s upbringing. This also explains the happy family life and a strong bond between the children and their lesbian mothers.

Having two mothers or father is becoming more common. It’s not wrong or bad in any way. These three studies on the topic of same-sex couples and their children proved that their family relationships are stronger and their overall happiness is better than in heterosexual households.

As seen the good impact that same-sex parents have on their children, more people should be open about this topic. It should also be totally accepted and even supported in our society that same-sex couples have children as well.
