Talk to Yourself in the Mirror to Boost Your Self-Confidence

Confidence is appealing. We may not admit it but we all admire confident people. The aura that they exude; of being aware of their self-worth and being able to do anything they want without taking peoples’ thoughts into consideration just makes them appear so attractive.

Luckily, for people who lack confidence and have self-esteem issues, there are mindfulness activities like yoga and talking to yourself in the mirror that can boost your self-confidence!

What Exactly is Self-Confidence?

Self-confidence is knowing your worth and not letting people dictate your actions. A person who is self-confident has complete faith in his actions and does not blindly follow the popular trends of society.

He respects the boundaries of society but he does not let them overcome his own judgment. Self-confidence is both, being aware of the society’s systems and resolute in one’s decisions.

When you trust your abilities enough to know not to doubt them and societal pressure doesn’t phase you anymore, know that you have mastered the art of self-confidence.

All in all, self-confidence is not about being proud or arrogant about your abilities — that would be overconfidence — rather, it is about trusting yourself, your decisions and your ideas over others’.

Why is Self-Confidence Important?

Self-confidence is a strong, positive trait that is linked to success and a happy, stress-free life.

Here’s are some reasons why you should consider working on boosting your self-confidence:

  • Self-confidence makes you look and sound attractive.
  • It builds self-esteem and makes your self-worth known to yourself and others.
  • It can reduce stress and anxiety, allowing you to lead a much happier and enjoyable life.
  • It promotes the presence of mind and good mental health.
  • Self-confidence leads to success.
  • It helps you conquer your fears and break free from the confines of self-doubt.
  • Self-confidence motivates you to try new things and promotes the desire to work harder.
  • It urges you to take a stand for yourself, making you self-sufficient and independent.
  • It doesn’t allow you to settle for less than what you deserve.
  • Self-confidence inspires others to be like you.

How to Boost Your Self-Confidence

There are several ways that can help you gain self-confidence. Apart from the obvious ways of self-grooming and maintaining a positive attitude, there are psychological exercises that are effective in building self-confidence.

One of these exercises, pioneered by Joe Vitale, is called the ‘Mirror Technique.’ All you need for this exercise is a calm and quiet space where you can talk to yourself in a full-length mirror without distractions and that’s basically it!

The Mirror Technique

The mirror technique is an effective confidence-building exercise that engages the subconscious mind to become more confident by vocalizing positive thoughts to your reflection in the mirror.

Many famous people, preachers, actors, politicians, influencers and public speakers openly admit to talking to themselves in the mirror to get that burst of confidence before an important show, interview or meeting.

It has been proven that speaking to yourself in the mirror can boost self-confidence by building self-esteem and self-love.

How Does it Work?

Some days, when you look in the mirror, all you see is a weird pimple-ridden creature looking back at you. Your self-esteem takes a nosedive, making you feel like the most unappealing human in the world. It affects your mood and everything that can possibly go wrong, goes wrong during those days.

Other days, you walk past a mirror and suddenly go, ‘Wow! I look stunning.’ You feel happy, energetic and confident of your looks the whole day. Everything seems perfect.

You see how your words and your own thoughts have an impact on your activities and their outcome, your mood and basically your whole day?

Well, the mirror technique basically works the same way. The only difference is that even on your ‘bad days’ you force yourself to stand in front of the mirror, stare into your reflection’s eyes, lift your chin up, smile bright and talk about a whole lot of things positive things about yourself.

Basically, what this exercise does is connect you directly to your subconscious mind — that awfully annoying voice inside your head that criticizes every single thing you do — and condition it to think positively.

Here’s how you can practice talking to yourself in the mirror to boost self-confidence:

  • Go to a quiet place, a room where no one will disturb you.
  • Stand in front of a full-length mirror. Straighten your posture and appear confident.
  • Look yourself in the eyes and think of all the positive things about you that you love.
  • Think about all the times you felt appreciated and loved.
  • Think about your past achievements.
  • Talk to yourself in the mirror, loud and clear. Say positive and encouraging things. Affirm to yourself that you are a confident person capable of making decisions and doing what you love.

Some things to say while talking to yourself in the mirror:

  1. I believe in myself and my judgment.
  2. I am capable of achieving even more than I have in the past.
  3. I am capable of making sound decisions for myself.
  4. I respect myself and I deserve the absolute best.
  5. I am an inspiration for others.
  6. I will always put myself before others.
  7. I will do whatever seems like the right thing to do.
  8. I am happy the way I am and I do not need to change to fit into society’s standards.
  9. I am proud of myself.
  10. Today will be a great day.

Make this exercise part of your morning routine and watch as your life changes for the better. You will be amazed by the progress and growth that you see in yourself in just a few weeks by speaking to yourself in the mirror for at least 15 minutes everyday.
