Cyprus attracts foreigners with its mild climate, developed infrastructure, high level of safety, and comfortable living conditions. The island is viewed not only as a holiday destination, but also as a place for long-term residence, doing business, family relocation, and tax planning.

Foreign nationals who want to stay in Cyprus longer than the standard visa-free or visa-based period can apply for one of the following immigration statuses:

• Temporary Residence Permit
• Permanent Residence Permit
• Cyprus citizenship

These statuses differ in validity period, grounds for application, applicant requirements, and scope of rights. A temporary residence permit is suitable for those who plan to live on the island for a specific reason, such as study, employment, family circumstances, financial independence, or remote work. Permanent residence provides a more stable status. Citizenship grants full rights as an EU citizen, but requires long-term residence and additional conditions.

When it comes to obtaining residency by investment, Cyprus allows applicants who purchase new property from a developer for at least €300,000 + VAT to apply not for temporary residence, but directly for permanent residence.

Temporary Residence Permit in Cyprus

A Temporary Residence Permit allows a foreign national to legally reside in Cyprus for one to several years, depending on the grounds for application. Previously, this status was often called a Pink Slip, but applicants now receive a standard residence card.

Temporary residence may be based on different grounds: residence without the right to work, employment, study, family circumstances, remote work, internship, research, or volunteering.

An important condition for temporary residence permit holders is the limit on absence from the country. If a foreign national stays outside Cyprus for more than three consecutive months, the residence permit may be automatically cancelled.

Main Types of Temporary Residence Permit

Visitor Permit

A Visitor Permit allows a foreign national to stay in Cyprus for up to 365 days, but does not grant the right to work in the country. Residence Permit for Family Members of a Cypriot Citizen

Residence Permit for Domestic Workers

The Domestic Worker Visa is designed for foreign household employees. This residence permit is issued for a period of one to four years and may be extended for an additional two years. If the employee has worked for the same family for six years, the authorities may permit further extensions.

Previously, employers were required to provide a bank guarantee to cover potential deportation expenses. This has now been replaced by a court-certified affidavit in which the employer confirms responsibility for covering the cost of a return flight to the employee’s country of origin if deportation becomes necessary.

The standard employment contract sets out the employer’s obligations. The employer must open a bank account in the employee’s name and transfer the agreed salary each month. Expenses such as airfare, work visa processing, medical insurance, or recruitment agency fees cannot be deducted from the employee’s wages.

The main requirements include:

• Monthly income of at least €3,500
• Accommodation secured for the entire stay
• Comprehensive medical insurance

For employed applicants, net income after taxes in the country of employment is taken into account. The required amount increases by 20% for a spouse or civil partner and by 15% for each child.

The Digital Nomad Visa is issued for one year and can be renewed for an additional two years. A spouse and minor children may also obtain residence rights in Cyprus, although they are not permitted to work or engage in economic activities in the country.

The minimum investment threshold is €300,000 plus VAT.
